What Does “Dive Deep” Mean? A Leadership Lesson from Pawan and Max

At Bezos Academy, one of our Leadership Principles is Dive Deep. It means looking beyond the surface, asking thoughtful questions, staying connected to the details, and seeking the information needed to make better decisions. Rather than accepting the first answer, leaders who Dive Deep take the time to understand why something is happening and what can be learned from it. 

In the latest installment of our Leadership Principles video series, Chief Technology Officer Pawan Uppuluri explores this concept with an unexpected co-star: 6-year-old Max. 

When Pawan introduces the topic of “Dive Deep,” Max naturally assumes it has something to do with swimming. Using the pool as an example, Pawan explains that sometimes you can’t find what you’re looking for from the surface alone. To uncover what’s really there, you have to dive deeper and take a closer look. 

The same principle applies at work. 

Whether solving a problem, improving a process, or making a decision, the best answers often come from asking questions and exploring beyond what is immediately visible. Through a child’s perspective, a complex leadership concept becomes simple: curiosity leads to discovery.
